Can you tell us about your business? What are you doing exactly?

We are Jessica Priscilla, a luxurious footwear brand that specialized in personalized and customized shoes founded in 2013. Each of our pair is uniquely handcrafted with passion and love. It’s customized by our client and produced uniquely for our client. I work as the creative director as well as the managing director of the company.

How did you come up with your business idea?

After I graduated with bachelor of commerce from University of Sydney, I went back to Indonesia for good, jobless, and had no clue what career I would pursue. I admitted that taking a business major was not my choice, it was my parents who had to make the decision at that time. Thus my Dad offered me a job in a finance and investment company.

However, deep in my heart, I knew that I would not enjoy working in the finance industry. I didn’t take that offer and decided to follow my passion…art and design. I always love art, design and fashion since I was a kid. Just one night, I felt that God gave me an inspiration to start my own business. Moreover, I have always had an eye for personalized things and accessories, yet I noted there was not many personalized footwear business in Indonesia. Finally, I made up my mind and decided to pursue my passion. With the combination of skill in business, passion for fashion, God’s grace; Jessica Priscilla (JP) was started.

How did you raise money to fund your business?

At the start we did not really have to raise a lot of money to fund the business, yet it just felt like God’s guidance and provision that I could meet my friends who were also fresh graduates like me. They supported and helped me with the internet platform, and advertising campaign. I was so grateful to meet many great people through out the process, from the production until the selling.

How do you promote your products?

We only use the social media and words mouth to mouth to promote our product, yet along the way, many opportunities offered to us miraculously, from a magazine feature in Australia, to Hollywood endorsements as well as several collaboration works. It has been a blessed journey for me and everyone at JP.

What do you see yourself and the business in a 3 years’ time?

In 3 years time, I pray that not only JP can be a place for people to be creative and share their passion, yet it can bring a good impact to its surrounding and a life transformation inside out for the worker as well. There will be a wider range of the product that the clients can enjoy. Few collaborations are still in progress. We really hope that it can bring a great name as an Indonesian brand in the international fashion world.

What advice do you have for someone looking to start their own business?

Follow your passion, have faith in God as your foundation, knowing that in whatever circumstances. Be persistent and work as hard as you can! Because faith without action is dead. There will be struggles and problems but never give up and always be grateful! No matter how hard is the situation, believe in yourself, you are going to make it. Start a business or your work, out of faith not out of fear. They say the road to success is pictured as a stairs right? Be bold enough to take the first step, even when you can not see the whole staircase. “No great achievement is possible without persistent work.”
