Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you get to where you are today?
My name is Dita W. Yolashasanti. I am a food photographer, stylist and illustrator based in New York City. My father was a photographer and spent his whole career in doing various art works. I have been introduced to the art world since I was a kid. Since childhood my passion for art and creativity developed and intensified with every brush stroke. This stimulated my fantasy and imagination.
I took serious my life passion in art when I moved to Kuwait to accompanied my husband who got an offer in 2007. Honestly, I felt bored far away from family and friends and decided to do something different. This was a turning point in my life and I challenged my self to start pursuing art and craft again; children’s clothes, home decoration, children toys until I explored cake craft world as well as food photography.
My friends and I already launched two food photography books; Food Photography Made Easy and Let’s Have Fun with Pocket Camera and Cameraphone for Food Photography. I took seriously my passion in food photography and conducted regular workshop whenever I got a chance to going back to Indonesia for holiday.
In 2010, I also started to receive cake order and decided to open my own cake shop in collaboration with Kuwaiti. However, my husband’s job has moved us around a lot since 2013 until we determined to settle down in New York in 2015. So currently New York city is my home.
What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
I celebrate my life with art and craft. I enjoy my time with watercolor experiment now! My husband and I are currently working on a book about our adventure in Kuwait using watercolor. My upcoming project is designing the fabric using watercolor together with my sister who is a fashion designer.
What is the most important lesson you have learned from your business life?
Money and profit are important to grow the business, but money is not everything for me. I more appreciate to live a life that’s filled with joy, passion, fun, excitement and laughter. I love to make people happy thru my project design. It is incredibly different when we do something with passion and joy.
What do you love the most about yourself?
I’m very adventurous after living abroad for many years. I am an outgoing, definitely an extrovert with very good interpersonal skills. So I love to be around my friends and family.
The role fear plays in our daily lives. How do you keep motivated to overcome your fear?
We do need fear in our life to trigger us to grow stronger. I don’t let fear to stop me trying new things. Believe in yourself. Do what you love. I believe what comes around goes around. I always learn and broaden my horizons to help other. And most importantly, be kind to others.
What comes next to your world?
I am keen to get involved in community services and to take a part in volunteer activities.
