Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you get to where you are today?
I am Katherine Karnadi, a 28 years old Jakarta-based illustrator. My dad was an architect and my mom took art major in college. So I guess art is in my blood already since I was not even born. When I was little, I remembered I love looking at their vintage art books collection and that was the first time I felt in love with art.
Growing up, I made the first biggest decision in my life, I decided not to go to college. That – I never regret. Not going to college gave me lots of life and work experiences, until one day, I was finally bored and tired of those 9-5 life so I quit my job when I was 25 year old and decided to reclaim my passion for art. And here I am!
What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
So many of my works are exciting! But currently, I am pretty fascinated with doing live drawing, just not long ago I worked for MaxMara & Phillip Lim and this month it’s going to be Diane Von Furstenberg.
Life drawing gets me out of my comfort zone. I usually hate it when people watching me draw – for me creating art is a very personal moment. But by doing life drawing, I am slowly getting out of that comfort zone which is always a good thing.
What is the most important lessons you have learned from your business life?
Always read and understand your business contracts and agreements!
What do you love the most about yourself?
I love that I am effortless. It’s not that I don’t try or work hard, it’s just that I am a happy-go-lucky person. I have ambition but I am not ambitious.
The role fear plays in our daily lives. How do you keep motivated to overcome your fear?
By believing in God and keep the faith. When life does not go my way, believing in God always provides me with comfort.
What comes next to your world?
I plan to travel this year then I want to start a family. I want babies and a house with large backyard and dogs running around. When it’s hot we swim, when it’s cold we cuddle. I think I’ll be happy with those blessings.
