Tell me a little bit about your background – how did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from Curtin University at the age of 19 with a bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Since then I helped out my family business in food import as business development manager. I started writing in my food blog (www.shoegarmama.com) at the same time. My blog exposure grew during the social media boom. It covers fashion & travel, however I am currently posting many lifestyle news instead of food blog.
In 2014, I built my own detox Tea Company called Skinnysip Tea with my best friend, Jeanice Lie. I am in charge of business operation while she handles most of product marketing side. My mom who has been a working mom all her life, is my main mentor until now.
What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on right now?
Being a good housewife! Haha..I just got married. With the Skinnysip Tea, we always push our boundaries and regularly introduce our new products. This year, we are expanding to retail & café supply on top of online end customers.
We are also building a new women empowering community called FLAG (Fight like a Girl) in collaboration with Spartan House. It’s a fun self-defence boot camp especially for women by implementing Krav Maga technique. We train women of all ages on how to defend themselves against sexual harassment and gender abuse. The issue is real but rarely discussed here.
What is the most important lessons you have learned from your business life?
Always make time for family and never underestimate the support of your loved ones.
What do you love the most about yourself?
I am my own worst critic but I can also laugh about myself. My husband always tells me that my positive energy is contagious, so I guess that’s something to be proud of.
The role fear plays in our daily lives. How do you keep motivated to overcome your fear?
I think it’s all in the mind. If you can control your mind, you can control anything. I always ask myself how bad I want to reach my goals and of course come up with a strategy. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people is vital to keep your spirit burning.
What comes next to your world?
Becoming a mom and building my own family. I also have an upcoming side project with my husband. We are going to open a new restaurant at Citywalk Sudirman soon.
