Editor’s Note: We have featured Farah Maklin on WomanBizlife (now Eunoia Women) in 2013 for her jewelry design business. Now, we are pleased to share her inspiring story again.

Can you give some background about yourself?

I came to jewelry design late in life. I was forged an early career in financial industry however until at the late age, I had strong desire to take on a course of jewelry design, but most part I am pretty much self-taught: sketching, beading, moulding. My new collection is the evolution from the previous collection, it’s a work in progress of the existing work. I worked it all out myself.

Please tell us about your company and what you do?

In 2010, I set up my jewelry brand farah maklin design and opened a shop and a studio in Kemang. For the last two years, we already had our collection displayed in some major department stores: Alun alun Indonesia, Galleries Lafayette Jakarta and kadokadi.com.

What inspired you to start the business?

I used to make simple beaded jewelry in my spare time and to wear for myself until family, friends and other people tend to like them as well.

How do you promote your products/services? What makes you stand out from the crowd?

Friends, social media, collaboration with magazine or department stores. Its your attitude and how you wear it that make you stand out from the crowd. A simple gems necklace can definitely be stand out in the right context. I try to make simple, modern classic with strong expression and wearable at a price people can afford.

What do you see yourself and the business in 3 years’ time?

Make things more beautiful and more people appreciate them as well. I also want to take on more collaborations and to develop online shop and to hire more people to make the jewelry. This way I can focus on exploring the creative design and concepts.

What advices do you have for someone who wants to start her own business?

Do what you like the most and focus on that its really important. Never let yourself get bored, stay curious and keep your mind open.
